Understanding SASE

Gartner advises a shift toward a cloud-native approach when adopting SASE, this is due to the shift of applications, devices and users from inside to outside the network. Many vendors market themselves as SASE, but only a few vendors, like Palo Alto Networks (Superloop’s partner), have successfully flipped their architecture to cloud centric.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a broad term that typically refers to remote access for users working from home or site-to-site virtual networks. Traditional Remote Access VPNs create secure connections to corporate networks but are standalone technologies that have been around for over 20 years. In the context of Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), this is replaced by Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), which is considered far more secure and suitable for modern connectivity needs, rendering traditional VPNs obsolete.

SD-WAN is one of the networking elements of SASE. SD-WAN was designed to enhance connectivity in corporate networks by optimising the use of the internet for cloud and internet-based applications, ultimately reducing costs and improving reliability. SASE, invented by Gartner, is a comprehensive architectural shift that integrates networking and security, combining SD-WAN with security functions to simplify and secure modern enterprise networks in response to increasing cyber threats and the shift toward cloud-based data and applications.

  • SD-WAN

  • Zero Trust network Access

  • Secure Web Gateway / DNS Security

  • Firewall as a Service (FWaaS) – Next Gen Firewall, usually

  • Advanced Security – Cloud Access Security Broker, Data Loss Prevention

SIEM (Security and Information Event Management) is a system for security event monitoring and log analysis, providing insights into security incidents, primarily used by security analysts. In contrast, SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) is a cloud-native platform that integrates both network and security services, focusing on secure access to resources from anywhere and designed for modern networking and security needs. SASE platforms can simplify security events that feed into modern SIEM platforms and improve incident response times.

Firewall as a Service (FWaaS), is a key element of SASE (Secure Access Service Edge). It offers network security in the cloud, serving as a replacement for traditional data centre firewalls. This approach aligns with SASE's focus on cloud-based secure access and network simplification for modern enterprises.

SASE (Secure Access Service Edge), offers numerous benefits:

  • Reduced Complexity: Simplifies the management and deployment of security and network solutions.

  • Cost efficiency: Cuts costs with streamlined management and operations.

  • Enhanced Security Posture (if Cloud native): Integrated security within the network for a robust defence against attacks.

  • Consolidation: Combines multiple security and networking services into one unified platform.

  • Scalability: Cloud-native design allows easy scaling for more sites/branches, cloud and users.

  • Continuous Updates (only if cloud native): Stay current with regular updates, features, security signatures for optimal security.

  • Quick Deployment (only if cloud native): Rapidly activate and scale solutions without major infrastructure changes, lowering integration costs.

  • Improved Cloud Performance (if cloud native): Improved UX by optimising the path between the user and cloud applications.

  • Unified Management: Manage both networking and security services through a single user interface, simplifying policy enforcement.

  • Protect users no matter where they are: Remote or on-premises using the same policy, ensuring end-users having the same digital experience.
