Why your FIFA/EA FC game feels laggy - and how to fix it

The real reason might have nothing to do with your plan. Consider this your VAR review, and find out how Superloop keeps your connection out of the blame game.

EA Sports: it’s in the game. Or… actually… is it in the internet connection?

If you've played FIFA or EA FC online, you already know that feeling where it’s like the game needed a second to catch up (and you've probably blamed your internet for it more than once).

Sometimes that's fair… but a lot of the time, the real reason has nothing to do with your plan, and everything to do with how EA sets up the match itself. Consider this your VAR review, and find out how Superloop keeps your connection out of the blame game.

TL;DR

  • EA FC connects some matches through a server and others straight to your opponent

  • That's usually why the lag feels random, not your internet plan

  • Lag spikes hardest between 7pm and 11pm, when everyone's online at once

  • Superloop holds 8.5 ms latency even during those busy hours, according to the ACCC Report 33 (June 2026)

Why FIFA/EA FC lags when other games don't

Most competitive online games send your data through a dedicated server, so you connect to it, your opponent connects to the same one, and the server sits in the middle, keeping both sides in sync. It's a clean, predictable setup, and it's worth understanding what really makes a good internet connection for online gaming before you assume your plan's the problem.

EA FC doesn't always work like that. Depending on the mode, you might be connecting straight to your opponent's console instead, with nothing in between to smooth things over. That's a big part of why EA FC lagging is such a common complaint on EA's forums and an evergreen hot topic on r/EASportsFC.

Peer-to-peer vs dedicated servers: why this game is different

EA FC actually runs on two different setups depending on what you're playing. Ultimate Team, Clubs and Online Seasons don't all work the same way behind the scenes.

Dedicated servers (Ultimate Team, Clubs, Rush, VOLTA):

  • Both players connect to the same central EA data centre

  • Your experience depends on your distance and routing to that server

  • Your opponent's home internet barely factors in

Peer-to-peer (Online Seasons, Friendlies, Co-op Seasons):

  • You connect directly to your opponent, no server in between

  • A patchy connection on their end becomes your problem too

  • This is where "speed-up lag" comes from: the game stalls waiting to sync, then rushes to catch up all at once

Why lag gets worse at night (peak-hour performance)

Ever notice your matches feel worse after dinner? That's not in your head!

7pm to 11pm is when congestion peaks

Between roughly 7pm and 11pm, more households are streaming, gaming and downloading at once, and your provider's network carries all of that extra load.

For dedicated server modes, that can mean a slower route to EA's data centre. For peer-to-peer modes, it's worse again, since both connections are more likely to be under strain at the same time. It's the same reason latency and ping rate matter so much for gaming: that split-second consistency counts for more than a big number on your plan.

Superloop's 8.5 ms peak-hour latency is ACCC-verified

Superloop's peak-hour latency comes in at 8.5 ms, verified by the ACCC's latest Broadband Performance Data (June 2026, Report 33), barely moving from the 8.4 ms it holds the rest of the day. Most providers see a real dip once everyone's home from work and online at the same time, streaming, gaming, and video calling all at once. Superloop barely moves.

Quick fixes you can try right now

  • For match day, go wired: Ethernet removes Wi-Fi interference from a game built around split-second timing.

  • Pause anything hogging the connection before kickoff: A housemate's stream or a background download can cause the exact stutters you're blaming on the game.

  • Check your NAT type in your console's network settings: A strict NAT causes matchmaking issues that look like lag but aren't about speed at all.

It might not be about your skills after all, so that’s a win!

If you're wired, nothing else is chewing your bandwidth, and you're still stuttering across multiple opponents, that points to your provider rather than your skills. A pattern (especially matches that keep dropping out entirely) is worth troubleshooting as a dropped-connection issue rather than a gameplay one.

Awarded Ookla's Fastest Fixed Network*, three times running

Superloop's nbn® plans are built for exactly this. Ookla awarded Superloop Australia's Fastest Fixed Network* for the third consecutive time, from 2025 into the first half of 2026, so your connection holds up whether you're on a dedicated server or up against a stranger's dodgy Wi-Fi.

FAQs

Speed and routing aren't the same thing. Fast internet won't fix a rough peer-to-peer connection or a congested route to EA's servers at peak hours.

The game loses sync with your opponent for a moment, then rushes to catch up once the missing data lands. This is common in peer-to-peer modes like Online Seasons and Friendlies.

Yes. A strict NAT type disrupts peer-to-peer connections, regardless of your actual internet speed.

A wired connection and a provider with strong peak-hour performance. Once you're past a basic speed threshold, consistency during busy hours matters more than raw Mbps.
