Is GeForce worth it in Australia? (With an NBN twist!)

Explore what GeForce Now is and unpack why the nbn plan behind it all matters just as much as whichever subscription tier you pick.

GeForce Now promises to turn nearly any laptop, desktop, Mac, Shield TV, Android device, iPhone or iPad into the PC gaming rig you've always dreamed of.

But there’s a trade off! Your internet connection is doing all the work that hardware normally would.

Your connection isn’t just part of the experience, it is the experience. That's the deal with cloud gaming… whether you're on GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus Premium or Amazon Luna. There's no falling back on hardware or GPU saving the day if your connection fumbles.

We’ll explore what GeForce Now is and unpack why the nbn® plan behind it all matters just as much as whichever subscription tier you pick.

TL;DR

  • GeForce Now streams the games you already own using NVIDIA's cloud hardware.

  • Australia's GeForce Now servers run through Pentanet's data centres in Sydney and Perth, so how close you are to one of those cities matters more than you'd think.

  • Download speed decides your resolution ceiling. Latency and stability decide whether it actually feels good to play.

  • A network with low, consistent peak-hour latency matters just as much as the speed tier you're paying for.

What is GeForce Now, and how is it different from buying games?

It’s a rendering service

GeForce Now streams the games you already own to almost any device, using NVIDIA's GeForce RTX hardware on the other end.

Unlike Xbox Game Pass, it isn't a library you're renting but instead works more like a rendering service. You still own each game through Steam, Epic or Ubisoft Connect, but instead of your laptop struggling to run it, NVIDIA's servers do the heavy lifting and stream the result back.

What does GeForce Now unlock for Australians?

Ray tracing and demanding titles become playable on a modest machine, a phone, or a smart TV, provided the game supports the service.

Does your NBN plan matter for GeForce Now? What determines the experience

Speed sets the ceiling, but it's not the whole story

Yes, but maybe not how you’d expect. Your download speed decides how high a resolution you can stream at. It doesn't decide whether the game feels good to play, that comes down to latency and connection stability.

Choose a wired connection every time

Before you go blaming your bad sesh on GeForce Now, check these first:

  • Go wired if you can: Ethernet makes a real difference, and 6 GHz Wi-Fi 7 is your next best bet over a crowded 2.4 GHz network.

  • Ask yourself if your housemate is the real op: If someone's marathoning Bridgerton in 4K down the hall, don't be surprised when your stream quietly drops quality.

  • Consistency wins over speed: A steady connection is just as important as speed tier. GeForce Now would rather turn the dial down on the resolution than let things fall apart entirely.

Latency to Nvidia's servers: What Australian players should expect

It all comes down to distance

Your ping to the nearest data centre matters more than your speed tier. In Australia, that means Pentanet's data centres in Sydney and Perth, so your proximity to one of those cities has very real, very measurable impact.

Why your internet provider still plays a part

NVIDIA's own benchmark is under 80 ms just to keep the connection stable, but stable and responsive aren't the same thing.

For a stream that actually feels good, you're aiming well under 40 ms, and if you can get closer to 20 ms, even better, that's about as close to native as cloud gaming gets.

Ping can also vary by game type. So, how much this actually matters depends on what you're playing, a twitchy FPS lives and dies by every millisecond, while something turn-based will barely notice the difference.

Enter your internet provider…

Getting traffic to the data centre quickly and consistently during peak hours comes down to how solid your provider's network is.

Game on, Superloop

Our peak-hour latency is exactly the kind of steady routing that helps here. The latest ACCC Broadband Performance Data (June 2026, Report 33) puts Superloop's average peak-hour latency at 8.5 ms, barely different from the 8.4ms recorded during regular hours.

Is it worth it? Our verdict

For players without a high-end gaming PC, yes

Ultimate gives you access to RTX 4080/5080-class hardware for a fraction of what that card alone costs, on whatever device you've got to hand. Session limits aren't really the issue, once you hit 8 hours, you can just close out and jump back into the lobby to start a fresh one.

It's less clear-cut for players who are clocking up serious hours…

The real number to watch is the monthly hour cap, and the price over time. Add up an Ultimate subscription over two or three years, and the total starts creeping toward the price of buying the card outright.

If you're already clocking 15+ hours a week, it's worth doing that maths before committing long-term.

What nbn® plan to choose for GeForce now

Chasing higher res on Ultimate, or sharing the connection with other gamers and streamers, is where nbn® 500 Mbps/50 Mbps (TES: 500/45 Mbps) or nbn® 1000/100 Mbps (TES: 860/85 Mbps) make sense.

And if you’re not sure how your provider is performing, run a quick speed test to see current ping, download and upload speeds.

Either way, bandwidth is only half the equation. You also need a network that holds its latency steady during peak hours. A network that has been awarded 2026 TechRadar Best NBN for Gaming and delivers 101% of advertised speeds (ACCC Report 33, June 2026)… that’s Superloop.

FAQs

Depends on what you value. GeForce Now streams games you already own at higher resolutions than most rivals, up to 4K at 120 fps on Ultimate, but you need to already own your games. Xbox Cloud Gaming and PlayStation Plus Premium bundle a library into the subscription instead, better for those gamers who don’t have an existing Steam or Epic collection.

In Australia, they’re located through Pentanet's data centres in Sydney and Perth. This means your latency will depend on your distance from these locations.

Xbox Cloud Gaming is bundled into Game Pass Ultimate and gives you a large library without needing to own individual games, but it currently tops out at 1440p. GeForce Now requires ownership, but Ultimate pushes further to 4K at 120 fps with NVIDIA Reflex support.
